Bronze, stainless steel, and mild steel

Based on a clock, and the twelve hours of the day, this form stands as a cage like monolith. As a time dial, it is symbolic of age and motion. Each of the twelve bars has a bronze cast, decaying manzanita branch, repeated as a crown at the top of the cage structure. This kinetic sculpture is subtly activated by any movement around the structure, giving it a presence of life within its own frozen state of decay.

Cast Bronze

Cast in bronze from a single wood charred wedge that was found in a field, smoldering, just after a wild fire in shasta county. The twelve wedges are stacked precariously, representing a leaning form of human control over the environment. Like a house of cards about to fall the number twelve is significant to hours of the day and night.

Gilded bronze

A cast gilded bronze crown made from a root discovered in the Little Grand Canyon of Georgia. This crown represents this area of Georgia. As a crown of gold it is highly symbolic in its loftiness, as a place of beauty, the Grand Canyon is a breathtaking wonder of nature. The crown itself is made from old roots and the materials that transform it are deceiving as is the Little Grand Canyon, which is actually a human eroded wasteland.

Burnt alder wood

A minimal representation of a standard pine tree form made from hardwood disks. These stacked doweled and charred disks represent a tree symbol or icon in three dimensions which are unified by the blackening of the torch.

Fire has played an important role in the finishing of most of my work: wood, glass, ceramic and metal.

This mixed media sculpture made from ceramic steel and concrete was influenced by two great Bay Area artists that I was fortunate to work with; Peter Voulkos, and David Ireland. It is Voulkos’ Stacks sculptures, and Ireland’s concrete Dumbballs, that inspired the formal aspects of this piece. The use of the eyes directly molded from trees in Oakland are recurring textures that seem to witness the viewer’s own onlooking.

This monolithic stump of a repeated slip cast ceramic design represents the manufactured reality of current day and the denial of nature. The process of slip casting is very much a repetitive process that is like factory production. Ironically the tree has been a source of both beauty and resource, yet in this representation both are void.
